A few questions about rugs?

1: I’m looking at turnout rugs and i’m wondering what it means when they say “no filling” also what it means by “170g filling”?

2: If a turnout rug is 600 denier what kind of rug is it? Light, medium or heavy weight?

3: The mare we may be buying is underweight and lacks muscle, we’re pretty saving her from the dealers because she’s such a sweet mare and she’s the kind of pony that has a lot of love to give but just hasn’t been given it so we’re spoiling her LOL. I don’t know what to do about rugs though. She hasn’t been wormed in 5 months and we think she has worms because her belly looks on weight but we can see her spine and hips but not her ribs. I don’t know what to do about her rugs, whether to get something a little bit bigger because she’ll put on weight so i can put it on her straight away (coolers and turnout) or to wait until she’s on weight. Would we need a bigger one if she puts on weight? Her belly would be the same as it is now just without worms but her hindquarters are very angular and lack muscle and flesh and her hips are fairly visible. I’m not riding for the first month anyway due to needing to get her measured and finding her a saddle and i’ll only be lunging along with her having turnout. She’s a cob so her hindquarters should be more round and toned. Will i need a bigger one when she puts on weight and muscle on her back and hindquarters? Should i buy one a few inches bigger now or wait until she has filled up more?

1. It means the thickness and weight of the filling, the higher the heavier. No filling will be a summer sheet/lightweight turnout.
2. Medium/Heavy weight.
3. I think it depends on your budget, I’d buy a rug that fits her as she is now, to save her getting draughty and accidents happening and she comes in from the field with her rug hanging off her and her legs trapped in the surcingles! Or you could by her a larger rug but fill the underneath with an underug, but then you also risk her getting too hot and dehydrating. Save yourself the bother, buy one that fits. You might not need one when she’s filled out as rugs go on the length of the horse, rather than the width.

1. The “fill” refers to how much stuffing it has – how heavy the blanket is. No filling is just a sheet, and 170g is a medium weight.

2. “Denier” has nothing to do with the weight, but everything to do with how easily it will rip. 600 denier is okay, but I’d want to look for something with 1200 denier to make it less likely to tear. It refers to how many threads per inch there are in the outer fabric.

3. It’s hard to say if your horse will need a bigger blanket later or not. If she measures in between sizes, you could go with the larger size, but I wouldn’t go too much bigger because if she doesn’t grow into it, you’ll just have an ill-fitting rug. If she doesn’t need one yet, you should just wait and see how she measures when the time comes.
