how can i cover floorboards nicely?

we recently moved house, and the new place is almost completely floorboards. we have dogs and cats and my mum is really worried that the floors will scratch, and she got a quote that it will be about $3000 to re-do the floors (we are renting, so that means we cant put carpet on, and we will have to fix any damages we cause).
she bought these plastic floor-runners that make it look like we are painting, and lots of little rugs. it looks awful. there are just mis-matched rugs all over theplace and bits of plastic, i hate it.
what can we do to keep the floors protected, but not ugly? thank you!
